- Eat well:
Avoid sugary and highly processed foods whenever possible. Try and eat healthy, go for whole grains, and eat raw fruit and vegetables whenever you can. Sugary foods can lead to the buildup of plaque around your teeth, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive in. Avoiding them can help your teeth protect themselves, even if you don’t have access to dental care.
- Be careful when brushing:
It is very important to use a soft bristled toothbrush which isn’t too harsh on the gums. Doing so will reduce your risk of damaging your gums and developing diseases like ulcers and gingivitis. Pay special attention when brushing your teeth to make sure that you don’t miss any areas. If you consistently miss the same spot when you brush your teeth, this spot will be much more prone to cavities and oral diseases.
- Use a decent mouthwash:
A high-quality mouthwash is an essential part of anyone’s oral care routine. They are great for killing bacteria and germs which can damage your mouth. Try and rinse your mouth with a mouthwash at least once per day – twice if possible. If you don’t seem to be able to remember to use your mouthwash, try and make it part of your shower routine or use it straight after cleaning your teeth.
- Floss every single day!
Flossing is absolutely essential, as it helps remove build-ups of plaque and food which your toothbrush can’t get to. Focus on getting between each of your teeth when you floss, otherwise you might find yourself prone to cavities.
- Avoid activities that might damage your mouth or teeth:
There are plenty of things that people do every single day that can impact their dental and oral health. If you have bad habits – like opening containers with your teeth – then stop doing them! Your mouth will thank you later!
- Break bad habits:
A lot of bad habits are responsible for unhealthy mouths and teeth. Things like smoking and drinking excessive amounts of coffee can lead to very poor levels of oral health. If possible, quit smoking, reduce your coffee and wine intake, and avoid acidic foods which can damage your teeth.
Although regular visits to the dentist are very important when they are possible, you can still take good care of your teeth on your own. Avoid bad foods, change your habits, and enjoy a better life with a healthier mouth!
