How Professional Dog Groomers Can Give A Dog’s Coat The Best Possible Finish

One of the core principles that is taught within dog grooming training is that the finish of a dog’s coat is effectively an advert for your skills.

Whilst at a practical level a wonderfully finished coat makes a dog look great, makes them healthier, and pleases their owner, whenever that owner is asked how they managed to get the dog’s coat looking so good, it is your name that is going to be mentioned.

Bear in mind that for a dog grooming business word mouth and referrals are like gold dust in terms of gaining new clients, so anything you can do to make every dog look its absolute best is something you want to be pursuing.

If you need more advice on how to achieve this, here are some pointers.

Ensure You Are Using The Correct Equipment And Accessories

One of the things that set the top groomers apart from average ones is that the best dog groomers ensure that, not only do have the right equipment, but they also ensure they know how to use it effectively.

This might require seeking additional dog grooming trading, but that investment will pay for itself time and again when your clients wax lyrical about your skills and professionalism to others looking for a dog groomer.

Clipping Matted Coats

One of the main reasons that you will be asked to clip a dog’s coat is due to much of its fur being matted. given that dogs can get into all kinds of scenarios, especially those where there are messy and sticky substances that cause the fur to matt, it is a common problem.

Clipping fur to remove matting is best done after moisturising the coat. A moisturised coat makes removing matting easier.

For those clumps which are simply impossible to remove, they will need to be clipped but using the above process should mean the amount of fur that needs to be clipped away is minimised.

Using Scissors

One of the learning objectives that should take priority is not just how to use scissors when grooming but also to learn all the different types of scissors that can be used for dog grooming.

With that knowledge, you should then feel confident in using scissors, but what will make your work even more effective is properly preparing a dog’s coat for trimming.

One suggestion is to use a volumising shampoo as this will lift the fur, meaning you do not need to fluff it up as much. This makes it easier to trim with scissors, and also saves a considerable amount of time.

Shampooing

As we have just mentioned a volumising shampoo, this highlights the fact that there are multiple types of shampoo you can use on a dog’s coat, and that applies to conditioners too.

Your choice of dog shampoos and conditioners is critical when it comes to how well any dog you are grooming will look, and it also has implications for the health of their fur and their skin.

Ideally, you want to use shampoos that are proven to be safe for dogs, and this will include shampoos that use only natural ingredients.

You will also find shampoos suited to certain coat types, issues within their fur, and skin conditions which should be used as and when appropriate.

Baths And Brushing

Thankfully, most dogs love water, and so the vast majority will have no issues when you are bathing them.

Apart from using the most appropriate shampoo, this is also an opportunity for you to ensure that their fur is cleansed, and given a chance to shine.

You will also want to brush through their fur, both when they are wet and when they are dry to give them the best possible appearance and of course, give you that four-legged walking advert for your dog grooming skills.
